"So Batman can't help me? Fine. In that case, let's see what Batgirl can do!"
―Barbara Gordon[src]

Barbara "Babs" Gordon AKA Batgirl is the daughter of Gotham City's Police Commissioner James Gordon. She later took on the mantle of Batgirl and became Batman's partner and protégé for many years.

Physical Description[]

Barbara Gordon/Batgirl is a slender, fair skinned and beautiful young woman with red shoulder length hair, blue eyes and red lips.

As Barbara Gordon, she wears a sleeveless black top with a purple plait skit, a black wristwatch on her right wrist and black shoes.

As Batgirl, she wears a grey bodysuit with a yellow bat chest emblem, blue gloves and boots with matching cowl and cape, and a yellow utility belt. However, when she was disguised as Batman in Shadow of the Bat Part I, she wore the same grey bodysuit with black gloves and boots with matching cowl and cape, with the yellow utility belt and she lacks the bat chest emblem. To give herself the appearance of Batman, she placed foam pads under her suit and inside her shoes.

In Heart of Steel Part II, she wore a purple sweater, black pants and grey boots.

On occasions, Barbara wears a pink leotard and black flat shoes, and her hair was worn in a ponytail for her gymnastics.

In Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, Barbara wears a glamorous black sleeveless dress in the middle of the movie. Later, on her date with Dick at Shaugnessy's, she wears a light blue short-sleeved dress with a dark blue flower decal on its front, matching socks and brown shoes. She wears diamond earrings, and her hair is held back with a hairclip.

Personality[]

Barbara was a brave woman of sheer determination. Despite her usual reasonable and calm attitude when needed, she could be reckless or clumsy at times.

As Batgirl, she can be impulsive and short tempered sometimes, but she is mature, caring and good hearted.

Even though she is intelligent, Barbara seems to have a dislike of math.

In Batgirl Returns, Barbara has a secret crush on Batman as shown in the dream sequence where after defeating Joker, Penguin and Two-Face, he was about to kiss her as gratitude for saving him, when the dream was interrupted by Dick Grayson.

Barbara is skeptic and sarcastic at times. She also displays a hint of nervousness as shown in Batgirl Returns when Catwoman asks her if she is afraid of going into the Stacked Deck, Batgirl, a little nervous, answers no she is not afraid.

History[]

Early Adventures[]

Barbara was first entangled with Batman's affairs when a renegade artificial intelligence machine, H.A.R.D.A.C.,[1] tried to replace the most influential citizens of Gotham City, such as James Gordon, Mayor Hamilton Hill, and Detective Harvey Bullock. Barbara was one of the few people who initially felt something had happened. Using a few skills, she picked up from her father and her experience as a gymnast while at Gotham University, Barbara managed to help Batman save the city from H.A.R.D.A.C.[2]

Barbara was then seen when her father was shot by Jazzman on the anniversary of the deaths of Bruce Wayne's parents. A sorrowful Batman visits Gordon in Gotham City Hospital, where Barbara tells him not to blame himself. Batman takes heart and captures Jazzman, while Gordon recovers.[3]

Barbara becomes Batgirl

When Commissioner Gordon was framed by Two-Face, Barbara donned a bat costume to help investigate. She did, however, find that the costume fit her better than she had anticipated, as she proved vital in clearing Gordon's name and capturing Two-Face along with his associates. Regardless of whether they agreed or not, Batman and Robin soon realized that they had a new ally in the form of Batgirl.[4][5]

Batgirl and Catwoman[]

However, Barbara's studies at the Gotham University prevented her from going out more often as Batgirl until she learned that the Jade Cat Statue was stolen from the University's museum and went to investigate as Batgirl. During the investigation, Batgirl came across Catwoman, who was also looking for the criminal to clear her name and the two of them formed a temporary alliance to find the criminal. The two of them eventually crossed paths with Roland Daggett, who was behind the theft, but the heroines would have perished against Daggett's men if Robin had not arrived in time to assist them. After capturing Daggett, Catwoman got away with the Jade Cat Statue, but Batgirl chased and captured her with a bola and reclaims the Jade Cat. Catwoman confesses that she planned on stealing the Jade Cat Statue all along, but she did enjoy working with Batgirl. Catwoman proposes the two of them team permanently, noting nobody in Gotham can stop them, not even Batman or the police. Batgirl seems tempted by this at first, until Catwoman unknowingly insults her father Gordon, causing her to refuse and remind her of their deal. The police arrived and took Catwoman into custody who claimed Batgirl is innocent. However, Catwoman escaped and took their car, and Batgirl allowed her to go free, knowing that there would be more opportunities to capture her.[6]

Kidnapped by Mr. Freeze[]

Barbara and Robin

A short time later, Barbara started a relationship with Dick Grayson, but before they could get serious, Barbara was picked as an organ donor to Nora Fries by Mr. Freeze, who kidnapped Barbara to sacrifice her in order to save his wife. Barbara endured as Freeze's prisoner long enough for Batman and Robin to come rescue her. The fight that followed caused Freeze's lair to explode. Batman, Robin, and Barbara were able to evacuate Nora and Freeze's Inuit ward Koonak in time, but Freeze had fallen into the fiery blast and was assumed dead. In actuality, he and his pet polar bears had survived. Back in Gotham, Nora was cured, much to Freeze's delight.[7]

Powers and Abilities[]

During her time as a superheroine, Batgirl had excellent detective skills, often solving difficult cases independently or with little help.

Barbara's academic skills were matched only by her gymnastic ability and natural reflexes, which she utilized to her full advantage as Batgirl.
