Batman Screen Writer's Bible was a book created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian to outline Batman: The Animated Series well in advance of the series beginning in 1992. It contains character descriptions, sketches, color coding, and episode conceptualizations.

The Bible makes clear of the show's inspirations of the darker Batman comic books of the 1980's by people like Frank Miller, as well as Tim Burton and Sam Hamm's 1989 film Batman. It also spells out intentions to move away from the campy comics of the 1970's and the 1960's TV show.

Characters[]

This is the first known description of Renee Montoya. She was raised in Crime Alley and her husband, also a police officer, was killed in duty.

She hates Bruce Wayne and everything he stands for. Inclined to spend off-duty time in volunteer work for St. Joan's Catholic Church, she believes that Wayne is selfish and deaf to the cries of Gotham's poor. She wishes she had kids and has a real soft spot for them, as well as a strong dedication to her family.

The Bible outlines most of the recurring rogues featured in Batman: The Animated Series, although Harley Quinn had not yet been created. The Bible mentions several villains that were never adapted into the show. They are:

  • Calendar Man
  • Gentleman Ghost
  • Mr. Big
  • Blackbeard
  • The Architect
  • The Mad Maestro

It also shows early sketches by Timm for other villains that did make appearances in the series, but looked much different in the final cut. Examples are Catwoman, The Scarecrow, The Riddler and The Penguin.

Background[]

Perhaps the greatest legacy of the bible is that it gave details on the origins and backstory of characters and places in the show that were ultimately omitted. Examples of this are origin stories for both The Penguin and Catwoman, whose backstories were scrapped by the writers at the behest of Warner Bros. as not to confuse younger audiences between the show and the contemporary film Batman Returns, which featured the aformentioned characters.
