This is background information and production notes of the episode If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?, from season one of Batman: The Animated Series.

Production Notes[]

  • This episode uses certain elements from Riddler's first comic book appearance in Detective Comics #140 (1948) including:
  • Edward Nygma's enjoyement of crosswords.
  • The corn riddle was used in the same context to lead Batman to a maze.
  • The climax of the story takes place on a maze.
  • At the end of the story, The Riddler avoids being captured.
  • In the scene where Batman and Robin first come across the maze in an amusement park, the word SEX can be seen in the background. The S and E are part of the name of a carnival attraction while the X is hidden as part of the scaffolding that appears just behind it. Hidden pranks like this are often done by studio animators as inside jokes amongst themselves.
  • The character model of Harvey Dent's assistant, Carlos, from "Two-Face Part I" was used for another character getting off the elevator with Nygma at the beginning of the episode.
  • During the opening sequence, several names can be spotted on the doors of Competitron's offices. The names J. Snow and T. Burgio are a reference to storyboard artist Jeff Snow and prop designer Trish Burgio, both members of the production cast of this episode.
