This is general information about production inconsistences, mistakes and external references related to the episode "Mad as a Hatter" from season one of Batman: The Animated Series.

  • Veronica Vreeland was voiced by Taxi and then-Evening Shade star Marilu Henner. While playing Elaine Nardo in Taxi, Henner also worked with Batman Returns Penguin actor Danny DeVito. However, unlike the gentlemen manners the Penguin showed to Veronica prior to kidnapping her, Henner and DeVito's characters had more worse of a history, with DeVito's character Louie de Palma often making inappropriate sexual advances towards Nardo. Like Vernoica, Nardo also appreciated art, but was very un-wealthy and fit in more with a working class environment. Main Taxi creator James L. Brooks was also affiliated with Batman: The Animated Series network Fox at the time as a co-producer of The Simpsons.
  • The chef, here named "Antoine", is similar to the chef of the Rose Cafe in the episode "Pretty Poison" and one of the guests of Jordan Hill's birthday party in "Be a Clown".
  • Tetch refers to his favorite book being Alice in Wonderland. The original book by Lewis Caroll is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which was followed by a sequel titled Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. Elements of both books are often condensed together in adaptations, and often referred to collectively as "Alice in Wonderland" . There are many quotes and direct references to the books scattered throughout the episode, as well as original artwork by Sir John Tenniel
  • Roddy McDowall previously played the Bookworm in the 1960s Batman TV series.
  • Also worth noting, Roddy McDowall played the character of the March Hare (the Mad Hatter's tea party companion) in the 1985 TV movie "Alice in Wonderland"

Inconsistencies[]

  • During the third act, Alice's costume changes between shots. In some she's wearing socks and in others, she wears pantyhose.
