Reviews[]

In 2014, John Takis reviewed the soundtrack from The Underdwellers as part of the 3rd Volume of Original Soundtracks from Batman: The Animated Series.

As with Clayface's debut in the two-part "Feat of Clay", Walker uses two themes to characterize the villain. The first is a series of simple down-and-up figures to represent his tragic aspect- the part that longs to be human. The second, a lurching seven-note theme, represent his anger and pride- the part of him that seems to derive pleasure from his gruesome transformation. "Mudslide" does not merely reapply these themes, but develops them in ways that expose the character's evolution. During the opening title card, melancholy chords suggest the theme representing Clayface's tragic side without actually forming it. When the theme finally does surface, it appears in harsh brass. This suggests a character whose humanity is steadily eroding; only in relation to Stella does the theme regain it's former pathos. Clayface's more monstrous theme, meanwhile, is now accompanied by shuddering, descending string figures that indicate his deteriorating physical condition. All this epitomizes Walker's approach to her work.
