Reviews[]

In 2014, John Takis reviewed the soundtrack from The Underdwellers as part of the 3rd Volume of Original Soundtracks from Batman: The Animated Series.

"Paging the Crime Doctor" boasts a strident main theme that kicks off the score with force, trading punches with the Batman theme over the course of the initial action sequence. On the other end of the spectrum, it appears in a sleazy noir vein for Matthew's familiar yet threatening manner with Leslie. Perhaps, the most effective variation comes during the suspenseful climax, where the theme is briefly superimposed over itself at constrasting tempos for an extra shot of intensity. The Batman theme, meanwhile, plays a significat role in the episode beyond the usual action riffs (which are plentiful and full-throated). In two key scenes, it represents the memory of Dr. Thomas Wayne; first for Leslie, thinking back on her friend, and again at the end of the episode when Bruce sits down with Matthew, not to reprimand a criminal, but to hear stories about his father. It's unusually moving ending for one of the series' most intriguing episodes.
