Reviews[]

In 2014, John Takis reviewed the soundtrack from The Underdwellers as part of the 3rd Volume of Original Soundtracks from Batman: The Animated Series.

Walker's tenebrous theme for Sid is deliciously melodramatic, whether slithering beneath dancing accompaniments during the opening cue, exposed in solo flute atop tremnling strings, or reimagined as a pompous march during the episode's final scene. Her Joker theme, meanwhile, makes the most of its lone appearance in the episode- sunk deep into the orchestra's lowe registers to capture the menace of the Clown Prince of Crime compared to a "weasely little gunsel" like Sid. But the score's most remarkable element is Walker's integration of pipe organ, bringing a sense of gothic grandeur to the proceedings. Organ appears throughout the score, only dialing the energy down for an extended funerary solo that plays under the Joker's memorable eulogy. (This is followed by the chords to the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace", which is performed in the episode on kazoo sans accompaniment.) When organ joins with brass to sing out the Batman theme during the climatic confrontation in Thorne's office, it is one of the most striking and memorable musical moments in the entire series.
